So you want to write a book.

July 28, 2017

Years ago, a small Michigan publisher conducted a national survey and found that a whopping 82% of Americans say they to want to write a book. I think this comes from an essential human impulse to create. All of us have within a deep well of creativity. All of us have stories to tell. So it's not surprising that so many of us want to get those stories out.

But the truth is, very few of those 82% of Americans will ever follow through. They won't follow through for a variety of reasons, but mostly because writing and finishing any kind of book or other long-term creative project is difficult. And it's made more difficult by the many other responsibilities and obligations constantly vying for their daily attention.

If you're reading this, you're probably among that 82%. So the question is, will you be among those who follow through, despite the difficulty? I wrote ChiWriting for those who answered "yes" and for those who want to get to "yes" but aren't sure how.

What is ChiWriting?

ChiWriting is an energy management approach to writing and the creative process based on the principles of endurance training. What does that mean?

You have probably heard it said that writing a book is like running a marathon. This is more than an apt analogy. The premise of ChiWriting is that you can use endurance training as a unique and practical model for organizing and powering your writing life. You can utilize the same principles, strategies, and techniques athletes use to condition their bodies for completing endurance events to condition your creative mind, supercharge your writing life, and complete your book.

There is not a serious endurance athlete anywhere, no matter how talented, who does not use a consistent, focused, disciplined, and progressive approach to preparing for races using some combination of the training principles I share in my book. Similarly, no matter how much natural writing talent you may possess, you will not be successful unless you employ a consistent, focused, disciplined, and progressive approach to getting words on the page. That's what ChiWriting is designed to do for you.

It doesn't matter what kind of book or other creative project you want to write--novel, short story or poetry collection, memoir, nonfiction, play, screenplay, or even a symphony--if you answered "yes" to the question above or want to get to "yes," ChiWriting is for you.

In my book, I share with you the principles I've found, as both a writer and triathlete, that will virtually guarantee that you'll not only finish your book or creative project but also improve your overall wellness and productivity in every life domain.

I invite you to try it here.

The author Sue Monk Kidd said: "Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can't remember who we are or why we're here." Tell your story. Write your book.
